Prooflike 1884 Three, MS61
1884 $3 MS61 Prooflike NGC. At first glance, this beauty looks just like a proof, but only on closer examination do the tell-tale signs of a circulation strike become obvious. The strike is excellent, but falls short of full. The fields are mirrored, but fail to show the depth of true proofs. The die was undoubtedly polished, but the planchet was probably unpolished. The tiny field spaces inside the ribbon bows show satin luster, but are not mirrored.With a mintage of only 1,000 circulation strikes, examples are rare and desirable in either format. This lovely piece has bright yellow surfaces and few minor marks that prevent a higher grade. Census: 1 in 61 prooflike, 2 finer (8/08).
