Description

Appealing 1884 Three Dollar, MS63

1884 $3 MS63 NGC. Although Bass considered the 1884 to be the rarest circulation strike of the decade, Bowers (2005) writes that while it is certainly "very rare," he would not consider it to be the rarest. He believes that between 80 and 110 examples survive in any grade from a mintage of only 1,000 pieces. Perhaps three-quarters of the survivors are in Mint State condition.
Delightful pumpkin-orange patina graces both sides of this powerfully lustrous specimen. The reverse is especially attractive, although both sides are lightly abraded and have great eye appeal. This crisply struck specimen is housed in an old NGC holder. Census: 5 in 63, 28 finer (7/08).(Registry values: N2998)
