    Choice 1884 Three Dollar Gold
    Rare Low-Mintage Date

1884 $3 MS64 PCGS. The 1884 three dollar gold coin boasts a tiny mintage of only 1,000 pieces, all delivered on December 13, 1884. There was little demand for the coins, other than as Christmas gifts, and it is likely that some examples were melted at a later date. Harry Bass considered the 1884 the rarest business-strike date of the series in terms of total number of pieces known, but a few dates are more difficult to locate in high grade.
The present coin is a well-detailed Choice specimen, with copper-gold surfaces that show only minor signs of contact. The fields display prooflike reflectivity in most areas. Housed in a green label holder. Population: 26 in 64, 7 finer (5/12).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 25N7, PCGS# 8006)
