    Seldom-Seen 1885 Three Dollar Gold, MS64

1885 $3 MS64 NGC. Ex: Princess Collection. The 1885 three dollar gold had the memorably low mintage of 801 business strikes. That total puts it at the second-lowest of the entire series--behind the 1881, with 500 circulation strikes--and one of only three sub-1,000-coin productions of business strikes in the entire series, with the 1883 at 900 coins. (Of course, the 1875 and 1876 threes were proof-only issues, with no business strikes at all produced.) This near-Gem is one of 16 so graded at NGC, with but four examples finer (8/10). The surfaces are medium yellow-gold for the most part, deepening to orange-gold on the high points and the obverse fields. There are scarcely any mentionable signs of contact, although we note a small dark toning spot at the chin line. A well-struck and eminently collectible example of this seldom-seen issue.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 25N8, PCGS# 8007)
