Description

MS62 Prooflike 1886 Three Dollar

1886 $3 MS62 Prooflike NGC. Three dollar gold pieces from near the series' end--1889--are frequently found with prooflike surfaces, as the mintages were so small that the prooflike characteristics remained in the die past the end of striking. Furthermore, in many years including this one, the business strikes were manufactured from the same die used for the proofs. This piece--from an emission of 1,000 coins--offers deep orange-gold coloration with lighter yellow-gold in the protected areas around the periphery. Some light field chatter on each side precludes a finer grade, but considerable eye appeal is present. Census: 9 in 62 Prooflike, 2 finer (8/07).
