Elusive MS62 1887 Three Dollar Gold
1887 $3 MS62 PCGS. Most of the gold coinage of 1887 was made at the San Francisco Mint, which churned out half eagles, eagles, and double eagles in large numbers. The modest mintage of 6,000 three dollar coins served only to prevent a major rarity--and even then, it appears that many examples were melted within a brief period after their manufacture. This example offers copious luster emanating from apricot-gold surfaces, with a few stray, undistracting abrasions that account for the grade. A trio of tiny planchet flaws between DOLLARS and 1887 requires singular mention, but this coin nonetheless displays much eye appeal and a generous quotient of historic interest.(Registry values: N2998)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25NA, PCGS# 8009, GSID# 8658)
