Description

1887 Three Dollar, MS65
Deceptively Scarce Issue

1887 $3 MS65 PCGS. Yellow-gold surfaces are complemented with blue-gold around the design elements and are awash in creamy mint luster. Weakness is present on the highest points of the design. Abrasions are minimal, as suggested by the Gem grade.

The 1887 three dollar gold piece has the highest mintage of the decade at 6,000 pieces. However, it is significantly rarer than the 1888 and 1889 issues, which had mintages of 5,000 and 2,300, respectively. The combined certified population of 1887 three dollar gold pieces from PCGS and NGC is 38% of the size of the 1888 population and 69% the size of the 1889 population. Garrett and Guth suggest that many 1887-dated coins were melted before they left the mint. Few examples of this issue circulated, with only a small percentage of survivors graded below AU. This is consistent with most dates of this denomination, especially as it neared its discontinuation.(Registry values: N4719)
