    Description

    Gem 1888 Three Dollar Gold
    Nice Color, Vibrant Luster

1888 $3 MS65 PCGS. Only 5,000 three dollar gold pieces were minted in 1888, but the issue is not as difficult to locate as that low figure would suggest. It is known that dealer J.W. Scott purchased a hoard of these coins from the Mint and sold them to customers on request over a period of many years. Philadelphia collector George Earle also saved a number of these coins in high grade in his famous collection. Present-day numismatists can thank these early hobby figures for the supply of Mint State coins available today.
The present coin is a well-struck Gem with vivid greenish-gold surfaces and bright mint luster. A few areas show rose highlights that add to the impressive eye appeal. Population: 83 in 65, 31 finer (5/11).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 25NB, PCGS# 8010)

    Weight: 5.02 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
