Description

1888 Three Dollar, MS66
Sharply Struck Gold Type Coin

1888 $3 MS66 PCGS. This 1888 Premium Gem three dollar gold piece survives from a humble mintage of only 5,000 coins. The series had been losing momentum through the 1880s, as there were was competition with the quarter eagle below it and the half eagle above it. The issues in 1887 and 1888 were by far the two largest of the decade, but after the 1889 issue the Mint finally chose to terminate the denomination.

This attractive Premium Gem is exquisitely struck with coruscating surfaces on rich, frosty luster, with fiery orange-gold patina that flashes lustrous hues of honey-caramel and powder blue. As usual on commercial strikes, UNITED is curiously die doubled. The obverse is pristine, eye appeal is exceptional, and a loupe reveals only a few tiny nicks on the reverse that preclude Superb Gem designation. PCGS shows only three numerically finer examples (1/26).(Registry values: N4719)
