Description

Smooth 1889 Three Dollar, MS64

1889 $3 MS64 NGC. There was never much demand for the three dollar denomination, although Philadelphia dutifully struck limited numbers annually for 36 years. The series came to an end in 1889, the same year as did the gold dollar, which bore similar designs. Today, gold collectors are grateful for the series, which is readily collectible aside from the 1854-D, the unique 1870-S, and a trio of proof-only issues. The present series example has substantial luster and rich apricot toning. Smooth save for a single faded mark through the O in DOLLAR. Census: 56 in 64, 22 finer (8/10).(Registry values: N2998)
