Delightful 1889 MS66 Three Dollar
1889 $3 MS66 PCGS. The three dollar gold series ended with 2,300 circulation strikes in 1889. David Bowers (2005) writes that thousands of these were held back at the Mint and melted in 1893-1894. High-end Mint State coins can be located, but it will take some patience and searching.Rich orange-gold patina envelopes this Premium Gem, imbued with traces of lavender and mint-green. A well executed strike brings out virtually full definition on the design elements, and impeccable preservation on the highly lustrous surfaces rounds out the delightful eye appeal. Population: 10 in 66, 2 finer (3/09).
