Description

1873-CC Trade Dollar, MS63
Finest Example at Auction in Three Years
A Major Condition Rarity

1873-CC T$1 MS63 PCGS. Ex: Linda Collection. For common type coin Trade dollars, MS63 is not a particularly high grade. But for the 1873-CC, MS63 coins are genuinely rare, only seen at auction once every few years. We have previously handled only six coins in this grade, the last of which was a PCGS example in our November 2014 Beverly Hills Signature sale that realized $17,625. Other auction appearances of this date in MS63 have neared or exceeded $30,000 between 2008 and 2014. No Select of finer '73-CC Trade dollars have been seen at auction since, meaning that the present coin may find itself in higher demand than expected when it crosses the auction block.

Liberty's figure and the stars are well-defined, and the eagle shows weakness only the right (facing) talons. Both sides are satiny and brilliant with the occasional minor abrasion as expected for the grade. A die marker on this piece is a horizontal tine through the D in DOLLAR. A few finer examples are reported by the grading services, but they are apparently in strong hands, as none have made recent auction appearances. This is a rare and important opportunity for the Trade dollar specialist.(Registry values: N7079)
