Marvelous Near-Gem 1873-CC Trade Dollar

1873-CC T$1 MS64 NGC. The Trade dollar, substantially heavier than its predecessor the Seated dollar, was the eventual destination of much of the silver mined from Nevada and California in the early to mid-1870s. In particular, the Comstock Lode's silver mines saw much of their output go to the various Mints to be made into Trade dollars, though the majority of Nevada silver actually crossed the border into California to be minted at San Francisco, rather than be struck in-state at Carson City.
The Carson City Trade dollars are particularly elusive due to a lack of savings, with the first and last issues, the 1873-CC and the heavily melted 1878-CC, the most challenging of all. To quote from the Q. David Bowers reference Silver Dollars & Trade Dollars of the United States, "So far as is known, not a single numismatist in 1873 was interested in collecting trade dollars by mintmark varieties. Nearly all coins were shipped to the Orient, although a few apparently saw domestic use. Many of the exported pieces saw heavy use and were chopmarked ..."
It is only through the purest happy accident that a handful of unworn examples have survived to the present day. This Choice coin is one of the best-preserved, crisply detailed and immensely lustrous beneath a melange of rich gold-orange, rose, claret, silver, and plum shadings. A handful of stray marks preclude Gem status, but the eye appeal remains impressive. Census: 5 in 64, 1 finer (11/08).(Registry values: N7079)
