Description
1873-S Trade Dollar
Brilliant, Frosted Gem Example
Almost Never Seen Finer
1873-S T$1 MS65 NGC. In general, numismatists and collectors
in the United States had little interest in Trade dollars and, in
particular, no interest at all in mintmarks when the initial
mintages of Trade dollars commenced at the San Francisco Mint.
Virtually all coins were exported, where they were subsequently
melted either in China or in India. Of the few examples that
returned to the States, many were chopmarked and virtually all were
circulated to one extent or another. As a result, both the 1873-S and 1874-S Trade dollars are extreme rarities in Mint State, especially in Gem or finer grades. Just two examples of the 1873-S issue -- one at PCGS, one at NGC -- are certified numerically finer than this brilliant, frosted Gem, which joins five other coins at the MS65 level at both services combined (7/14). The present coin is displays bold cartwheel luster with a mere powdering of silver-gray patina. A full strike adds to the appeal.(Registry values: N4719)
