Description

1873-S Trade Dollar, MS65
Condition Census Rarity

1873-S T$1 MS65 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Legend. Medium S. Only a handful of Trade dollar issues can be considered in any way available in Gem condition, and none were coined during the debut year of the design. In 1873, Trade dollar production was the highest in San Francisco (703,000 pieces), but high-grade survivors are significantly scarcer than those of the Philadelphia issue. In MS65 and finer grades, PCGS and NGC combined report only eight examples, just three of which have received CAC endorsements.

The present Gem offers vibrant, frosty luster with a hint of light golden toning. Close study with a loupe fails to reveal significant abrasions, and the eagle's right (facing) talons exhibit the only mentionable strike weakness, which is minor. Eye appeal is exceptional for the issue. Population: 3 in 65, 1 finer. CAC: 2 in 65, 1 finer (11/16).
