Description

1873 Trade Dollar, MS66
CAC-Approved Registry-Grade Example

1873 T$1 MS66 PCGS. CAC. The Trade dollar was introduced in 1873 to facilitate foreign trade with China. These coins were intended to compete with the Mexican 8 reales coinage that was the trade coin of choice in the Orient. Most of the U.S. produced Trade dollars were coined in San Francisco while smaller mintages took place in Philadelphia and Carson City. The coins were struck from 1873 through 1878 with additional proof-only issues at Philadelphia from 1878 to 1885.

The Philadelphia Mint produced a workmanlike mintage of 396,900 Trade dollars that year, but the issue is even more difficult to locate in high grade than the relatively modest production total would suggest. The finest examples known to us are graded MS67 PCGS, MS66 PCGS (5), and MS66 NGC.

This spectacular Premium Gem exhibits sharply detailed design elements in most areas, with just a touch of softness on the eagle's right (facing) claws. The lustrous surfaces are impeccably preserved and show subtle highlights of lavender-gray toning. Eye appeal is outstanding. This example holds the auction record for 1873 Trade dollars at $60,000, a price achieved three years ago in our Central States Signature auction. The sole finer MS67 example has never appeared for sale in any auction known to us. Housed in a Generation 3.1 green label holder. Population: 5 in 66, 1 finer. CAC: 1 in 66, 1 finer (1/25).
