    Description

    1874 Trade Dollar, MS65
    Only Two Numerically Finer

1874 T$1 MS65 PCGS. CAC. No period after FINE, as often seen on this issue. Pretty much any Trade dollar issue is a condition rarity in MS65, and early dates in the series are particularly elusive in high grade. The Trade dollar was first and foremost a trade coin, intended only for export. When it ultimately did circulate domestically, it caused a commercial use problem due to its heavy silver weight. It was never the subject of strong numismatic interest at the time of issue, and most collectors who did obtain examples often acquired proofs (which are relatively plentiful today).

We have previously handled a Gem 1874 Trade dollar on only five or six occasions, and we have never seen a finer coin, despite a few higher-graded specimens in the population data. This piece is the most attractively toned Gem 1874 that we have seen, showing natural amber, lilac, and sky-blue toning overall. The fields are moderately reflective, although strike weakness around the borders and on the eagle's right (facing) leg confirms the business strike origin of this piece. Population: 6 in 65 (1 in 65+), 2 finer. CAC: 2 in 65, 2 finer (5/19).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 252Z, PCGS# 7034)

    Weight: 27.22 grams

    Metal: 90% Silver, 10% Copper
