Interesting 1875-S/CC Select Trade Dollar

1875-S/CC T$1 MS63 NGC. VP-001. FS-501, formerly FS-012.5. Type One Reverse. The more obvious of the two 1875-S/CC varieties, the presence of the C mintmark to the right of the S is irrefutable. David Bowers (1993) writes: "This issue was generally unknown to numismatists until the early 1960s. One of the earliest market appearances of the variety was in New Netherlands Coin Company's sale of December 10-11, 1963." Bowers go on to say: "In 1962-3, the 1875-S/CC overmintmark was considered to be a great rarity, but over a period of time additional specimens came to light. Today it is considered to be moderately scarce in lower grades and quite rare in Mint State."
The lustrous surfaces of this select specimen display electric-blue, lavender, and gray-tan toning, and just a few minor ticks that limit the grade. An impressive strike brings out sharp definition on the design features. Census: 3 in 63, 4 finer (8/07).(Registry values: N4719)
