1877-S Trade Dollar, MS65
Seldom Seen So Fine

1877-S T$1 MS65 PCGS. CAC. Large S. The 1877-S Trade dollar saw what by far the largest mintage in the series, at nearly 10 million pieces. The introduction of the Morgan dollar in the following year would ultimately doom the series, even though both 1878-S Morgan and Trade dollars were struck. The very ubiquity of the 1877-S Trade dollar at one time likely relegated it to circulation as "nothing special." Today, however, the average certified survivor is only Choice AU. Gems such as this piece, certified in a PCGS green-label holder, are seldom seen. The obverse is mostly untoned silver-gray with a light blush of rose, while the reverse displays deeper orange and amber hues. Generous luster prevails on both sides, and the strike is quite bold, if a touch short of full. A pair of diagonal marks on the lower part of Liberty's rock are among few signs of contact. Population: 26 in 65, 7 finer (4/13).(Registry values: N4719)
