Description
Exceptional MS66 1877-S Trade Dollar
Ex: Eliasberg
1877-S T$1 MS66 PCGS. CAC. Eliasberg. The Eliasberg catalog
notes that "Under high magnification the top part of the S mintmark
has some interesting diagonal lines in it." These lines appear to
be die chipping. With a mintage in excess of 9 million pieces, one
would expect there would be a significant number of Uncirculated
coins extant today. And that is the case until one reaches the MS65
level. Above MS65 there are very few pieces known. Both services
have only certified 10 coins as MS66 with two finer (11/08). It
should not be surprising that Eliasberg had one of the finest
examples known since he had such deep pockets for the purchase of
coins. This piece has swirling mint luster beneath the iridescent
blue, gray, and golden toning that covers each side. The design
elements are fully struck on both obverse and reverse, and there
are no noticeable abrasions. Population: 6 in 66, 1 finer
(11/08).Ex: Eliasberg (Bowers and Merena, 4/1997), lot 2344.
