Description

1878-CC Trade Dollar, MS62
Important Carson City Condition Key

1878-CC T$1 MS62 PCGS. With a mintage of only 97,000 pieces, the 1878-CC is the prized key to the Carson City Trade dollars. In The Confident Carson City Coin Collector, Rusty Goe writes, "Possibly only about one-quarter of one percent of the original mintage ... survives today, in all condition ratings." Goe estimates that the Mint State popular is as low as 25 to 32 coins, a number that is plausible when one considers the likelihood of duplications in the published grading service figures.

This Mint State example displays deep original toning that covers each side in olive-russet color, while golden, amber, and greenish hues flash in the fields when tilted beneath a light. Minor abrasions define the grade. The strike is sharp. Population: 8 in 62 (1 in 62+), 17 finer (10/21).
