Description

1878-S Trade Dollar, MS65
Last Business-Strike Issue

1878-S T$1 MS65 PCGS. CAC. Luster emerges beneath the patina on this Gem example from the final business strike issue of the Trade dollar series. Contemporary collectors, however, saved few specimens and S-mint coins are quite elusive at the MS65 level. The surfaces reveal hues of sea-green, yellow-gold, red, and peach. Though not fully struck, the design elements reveal a pleasing degree of detail. A few minuscule marks and grazes are present along with a small die lump on Liberty's neck. Once Morgan dollar production began, only proof Trade dollars were minted until the series ended a few years later. Population: 23 in 65 (3 in 65+), 26 finer (6/14).(Registry values: N4719)
