    Description

Bright and Reflective 1876 Choice Mint State Trade Dollar

1876 T$1 MS64 PCGS. Type One Obverse, Type Two Reverse. A sharply struck coin that shows ample mint frost on the devices and prooflike reflective fields. The surfaces are attractive, with few signs of nicks or distracting problems. A few hairlines can be seen when examined under a strong light. Completely white save for a faint streak of gold on the obverse above Liberty's knees. Centennial year issue for the United States, and a well made coin that retains strong eye appeal. Our consignor stated that very few examples are known with the prooflike fields, and this coin was apparently one of the first struck after the dies were polished, and perhaps after proof coins were struck from these same dies.
The I/II obverse and reverse subtype combination is much scarcer than the usually seen I/I variety. Furthermore, there are raised die scratches beneath the left wing of the eagle near the arrows, others cross through the letters of TRADE. Such fine lines would have quickly disappeared from the die, and would be present only on the earliest coins produced from these dies. Curiously Proofs are known with the Type I/I, I/II and II/II die combinations for 1876, clearly Charles Barber was working on the hubs and experimenting.
