Description

Scarce pair of patterns including: Mahmud II gold pattern 1/4 Altin 1223AH Year 7, unlisted but similar to KM608. The obverse features the tughra with 750 in Arabic numbers above the Arabic SCH, short for Kurus. The 750 refers to the fineness. The reverse shows the standard legends including the regnal year 7 and accession date 1223. The style of the strike is very impressive and includes a finely milled edge. The weight is 0.52. Also included in this lot is a second pattern in gold, undated, but style of Abdul Maid (1255AH) and also well made with reeded edge, 1.15. The design style of this second piece suggests that it was possibly made in Europe as a mint sample for Turkey as it converted its mint machinery and coinage to a more modern standardized style. Both patterns are certainly rare, and the only examples we have seen offered for sale.
