Description
1875-CC Twenty Cent, Colorful MS66
Tied for Finest at PCGS
1875-CC 20C MS66 PCGS. BF-4, R.2. Right Date, Wide CC. This
delightfully patinated Premium Gem 1875-CC twenty cent piece
displays areas of untoned silver-gray complemented by ochre-gold,
deep blue-violet, and cinnamon toning nearer the rims on each side,
all amid top-notch preservation. The surfaces are remarkably free
of mentionable abrasions on each side and show a high degree of eye
appeal. Some diagonal die-polishing lines appear in the lower
reverse fields on either side of the eagle, and the strike overall
is better than normally seen. This die pairing is "relatively
common" according to Lane Brunner and John Frost's Double
Dimes reference, but the reverse is particularly interesting:
It was reused in the following year to strike the legendary 1876-CC
twenty cent pieces. This MS66 PCGS coin is one of only eight so graded, and none are finer (6/15). The last PCGS example in this grade we offered was lot 5206 in our FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2014), which brought $48,469.(Registry values: N7079)
