Description
1875-S Twenty Cent, Stunning MS67
A Type Set Essential
1875-S 20C MS67 PCGS. BF-3, R.5. The obverse shows the date
far left, 1 point of the shield directly atop the right side of the
1 and a small die crack in the denticles above stars 2 and 3. The
reverse on this rare die pair always shows weakness, quite
noticeable on this stunning Superb Gem, on the tops of TED STA in
particular. Some weakness also appears on the two E's in the
denomination. Parallel die striations from the planchet production
process, as made at the Mint, appear on the reverse fields and the
top of the eagle's left (facing) wing. Beyond these technical
quibbles, however, the fact remains that there are no post-Mint
distractions of any mentionable sort. Gorgeous frosty luster
complements tinges of amber-gold and pale sage on both sides. The
1875-S is, of course, by far the most available issue in the
short-lived twenty cent series, and this is one of the finest
survivors, a virtual necessity for many fine 19th type collectors.
