1864 Two Cent Piece, MS65 Red
High-End Small Motto Coin
1864 2C Small Motto, FS-401, MS65 Red PCGS. The 1864 Small
Motto two cent piece is a Guide Book variety collected as a
separate issue from the available Large Motto variant. It is one of
the two key issues in the series along with the 1872. Small Motto
coins are sought-after in all grades, but only in Red Mint State is
the scarcity of the variety fully realized. PCGS has certified only
45 Red Uncirculated Small Motto two cent pieces, mostly clustered
in MS64 and MS65. This Gem displays frosty copper-red luster and
remarkably well-preserved surfaces. The strike is sharp, and only a
few unimportant flecks are seen under a loupe. Housed in an old
"rattler" holder. Population: 0 in 65 Red, 0 finer (10/17).Coin Index Numbers: (Variety PCGS# 38234, Base PCGS# 3581)
