    Description

Glossy Gem 1864 Small Motto Two Cent

1864 2C Small Motto MS65 Brown PCGS. Although designated Brown, considerable mint red still lurks in the protected areas of each side, a bit more noticeably on the reverse. The first T in TRUST nearly touches the ribbon fold, and the leaf stem below is bold. Another reverse diagnostic of the business strike Small Motto is present: die cracks join most of the peripheral letters and devices at their bottoms. The surfaces are smooth, glossy, and problem-free on this strict Gem example of a key issue in this understudied and short-lived series. PCGS has graded only seven Gem pieces within this color designation, and none finer (6/06); the number of Gem Small Motto pieces (all colors) is about one-tenth that of the Large Motto coins at that service.(Registry values: N1793) (NGC ID# 22N8, PCGS# 3579)
