1864 Small Motto Two Cent Piece, MS66 Brown
Significant Underlying Red is Apparent

1864 2C Small Motto MS66 Brown NGC. The Small Motto 1864 has been an avidly pursued rarity for generations. An unknown, but small number of business strikes were minted with the Small Motto on the wreath. Probably only a couple of thousand Small Motto coins were produced, and the remainder of the 19+ million two cent pieces dated 1864 were of the Large Motto variety. This is an especially pleasing example of this rarity. The surfaces are called Brown by NGC, but the brown is just a light, even overlay of patina with most of the original red still showing through the thin veneer of brown. The reverse shows interesting multiple die cracks around the periphery. A splendid, problem-free coin that has more to offer than the obvious rarity of the Small Motto variant. Census: 5 in 66 Brown, 0 finer (7/10).(Registry values: N2998)
