Description

1865 Two Cent, MS67 Red
Fancy 5 in Date

1865 2C Fancy 5 MS67 Red PCGS. Until recently, little attention was paid to the variations in the flag of the 5 on two cent pieces dated 1865. While the Guide Book acknowledges the two states, it does so only in a footnote as of the 2014 edition: "Varieties show the tip of the 5 either plain or curved."

Similarly, PCGS historically has been slow to recognize the Plain and Fancy 5 variants, but that has changed, as this Red Superb Gem coin's insert proves. The coin itself is a beauty, softly lustrous orange and peach with a good strike and just a hint of satin to the luster. Any MS67 Red two cent coin is a great rarity; as of (11/13), the PCGS Population Report lists one 1864 Large Motto, one 1865 without 5 specified, and this coin.
