Description
1866 Two Cent Piece, MS66 Red
Unmellowed Surfaces
1866 2C MS66 Red PCGS. CAC. This lustrous peach-gold Premium
Gem Red 1866 two cent piece exhibits sharply struck motifs and is
devoid of mentionable abrasions. With a loupe, the determined
observer can detect the infrequent tiny carbon fleck, but none are
obtrusive. An exemplary, frosty coin overall, housed in an old
green-label holder. The first two years of the two cent piece saw hefty mintages (nearly 20 million in 1864 and more than 13 million in 1865), largely resulting from the Civil War coin shortage. After the war, fewer banks called for this denomination and mintages began to dwindle. Slightly more than 3.1 million pieces were coined in 1866, and this issue is scarce in full Red condition today.
