Red and Brown Gem 1872 Two Cent
Final Business Strike Year
1872 2C MS65 Red and Brown PCGS. The bronze two cent piece
was created to address the need for small coinage during the Civil
War, but the denomination had no place in the postwar era, and
dwindling mintages reinforced the fact. By 1872, the last year of
business strikes before the two cent coin was put out of its
misery, just 65,000 pieces were struck, and most have been lost. By
contrast, this example is not only a Gem, but it has considerable
reddish-orange luster to go along with the violet-brown dotting the
obverse and occupying the central reverse. A warmly lustrous and
amply appealing coin with minimal carbon. Population: 11 in 65 Red
