Description

1872 Two Cent, Seldom-Seen MS65 Red

1872 2C MS65 Red NGC. The entire two cent series lasted less than a decade from 1864 through 1873, but the 1873 issue was proof-only, first Originals, then "alleged" Restrikes, per the Guide Book. This last circulation-strike issue in the two cent series saw a meager mintage of only 65,000 coins (and perhaps 1,000 proofs), and only a scant few survive today as fine as this Gem Red example. The orange-red surfaces show good luster and few marks amid a good strike and overall excellent eye appeal. No mentionable carbon appears, and the top of the U(NITED) shows a straight-line die crack, with other cracks appearing near the bow area. Census: 2 in 65 Red, 1 finer (4/15).(Registry values: N2998)
