Description

    1872 Two Cent, MS65+ Red
    Low-Mintage Circulation Strike

1872 2C MS65+ Red PCGS. This MS65+ Red 1872 two cent from PCGS is clearly among the finest survivors of this last, low-mintage business strike issue in the series, produced to the extent of a meager 65,000 pieces. (The 1873 two cents were proof-only issues, whether original or restrike.) The "Crime of '73" the following year would introduce sweeping changes in U.S. coinage, including eliminating the bronze two cent and the silver three cent and half dime denominations. Golden-red luster covers each side, with only the tiniest traces of carbon. The strike is boldly detailed, about as nice as ever seen outside of proofs. PCGS has certified only three Red pieces finer, all MS66 (5/12).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 22NG, PCGS# 3614)
