Description

1872 Two Cent, MS66 Red
Among the Finest Known

1872 2C MS66 Red PCGS. CAC. The Civil War era brought about a number of unusual denominations and methods of paying for goods and services, including encased postage stamps, fractional currency notes, paper scrip (known as obsoletes) and Civil War tokens. The two-cent coins were introduced in 1864, with the three-cent nickel coins debuting the following year. The next year, the nickel five-cent piece was also being produced. As the new denominations were issued, the two-cent pieces dwindled in popularity. The initial two-cent production figure was 19,822,500, but the mintage dropped each year, drastically the first several years. Although the series ended in 1873, production that last year consisted solely of proof coins. The number of two-cent coins produced in 1872 for circulation, the last year of business strike production, was only 65,000.

Bright orange-red surfaces along with strong luster are attributes of this Premium Gem example. In addition, the strike is sharp. A few wispy die cracks are present. An as-made lint mark appears on the leaf near 3 o'clock on the obverse. Minor scattered carbon does not pose a distraction.

An exceptional coin with strong visual appeal, this piece is tied with only four others as the finest known surviving example and is housed in a first generation holder. PCGS has awarded the MS66 Red grade to three examples, with NGC having assigned only two coins the MS66 Red grade. Neither service has awarded a higher grade to a single piece (11/13), and this is the only CAC-designated MS66 Red.(Registry values: N4719)
