Description
1872 Two Cent, MS65+ Red and Brown
Final Year of Circulation Strikes, CAC
1872 2C MS65+ Red and Brown PCGS. CAC. The bronze two cent
piece was created to address the need for small coinage during the
Civil War, but the denomination had no place in the postwar era,
and dwindling mintages reinforced the fact. In 1872, 65,000
circulation strikes were issued before the two cent coin was
retired, most of which are now lost to attrition or other factors.
This example is not only a well-preserved Gem, but it has
considerable reddish-orange luster to accompany violet-brown toning
that dots the obverse and occupies the central reverse. This is a
warmly lustrous and amply appealing coin with minimal carbon. Few
are known any finer. Population: 3 in 65+ Red and Brown, 4 finer.
CAC: 14 in 65, 1 finer (3/20).Ex: Chicago Signature (Heritage, 8/2013), lot 5525. (Registry values: N2998)
