1873 Open 3 Two Cent Piece
PR66 Red and Brown

1873 2C Open 3 PR66 Red and Brown PCGS. CAC. The Open 3 variety of the proof 1873 two cent piece is widely believed to be a restrike, as that style of 3 was primarily incorporated closely following the end of the two cent series. High-grade survivors of the Open 3 variety are scarcer than those of the Closed 3 variant, especially with remaining mint Red. As a date, however, Premium Gem quality pieces in any color designation are seldom seen. This piece displays even bronze luster overall, with faint copper-red and olive-gold hues blended in the fields. The strike is sharp and the preservation is outstanding. Population: 20 in 66 (1 in 66+) Red and Brown, 0 finer. CAC: 10 in 66, 0 finer (11/22).
Ex: Rarities Sale (Bowers and Merena, 8/1998), lot 51; Eugene H. Gardner Collection (Heritage, 6/2014), lot 30110, where it sold for $11,750.
