    John E. Howard Comitia Americana Medal
    Paris Mint, Betts-595, MS63 Brown

    Lieutenant-Colonel John E. Howard MS63 Brown NGC. Betts-595, Julian-MI-9. Bronze, 47 mm. Struck by the Paris Mint from the original dies. A rim die break is present above the E in PEDITUM, and the E in ACIEM is entered low. The edge is concealed by the holder. A magnificent and boldly struck mahogany-brown specimen without contact marks or high-point friction. Julian writes, "Director Pollock ordered twenty John E. Howard medals struck in Paris and sent to Philadelphia in March, 1862." A Paris Mint example struck from the original dies, graded MS64 Brown by NGC, sold in a February 2014 Heritage auction as lot 4490 for $3,818.75. As of (9/18), NGC reports 4 in MS63 Brown, 1 in MS64 Brown, and 1 in MS65 Brown.
