    c. 1805 Benjamin Franklin Medal, MS62 Brown
    Early U.S. Mint Product, Betts-546, Julian-CM-8

1776-Dated Benjamin Franklin Medal, Bronze, MS62 Brown NGC. Betts-546, Julian-CM-8, Greenslet-80. 41 mm. The editors of the 1894 C. Wyllys Betts reference on American colonial historical medals explained: "Although the Medal is dated 1776, it was struck at the United States Mint early in the present century, and is often spoken of as the Sansom Medal, from the gentleman under whose direction the dies were prepared by Jacob [John] Reich." Indeed, these Benjamin Franklin commemorative medals were sold as part of three-piece sets commissioned by Joseph Sansom and produced circa 1805. This glossy mahogany-brown example enjoys reddish and steel-blue accents. Design definition is unsurprisingly complete. Die rust appears in the exergue around the date.
