    1836 First Steam Coinage Medal
    SP62 Brown, Scarce Julian-MT-20

1836 First Steam Coinage, Feb. 22, Bronzed Copper, Julian-MT-20, SP62 Brown PCGS. The 1836 advent of steam coinage at the Philadelphia Mint was celebrated with two U.S. Mint medal varieties. Julian-MT-21 is dated MAR. 23, and shows up regularly at auction. But Julian-MT-20, dated FEB. 22, is seldom encountered. Technical glitches with the new steam presses delayed the first steam coinage, and were responsible for the rarity of J-MT-20. The obverse die was the same for both varieties, but J-MT-21 originals often exhibit an obverse rim cud at 6 o'clock. The present medal was struck from perfect dies. It is well struck and unblemished with steel-blue toning throughout the fields. Design recesses display golden-brown color.
