    Description

1836 Henry Clay Medal. Sullivan-DeWitt HC-1836-1. White metal, 36 mm, 16.9 gm. Dies by Benjamin True. A scarce issue. Obverse: Bust of Clay facing left, HENRY CLAY OF KENTUCKY around, signed TRUE F. under truncation. Reverse: E PLURIBUS UNUM in scroll, decorative allegorical border around with EQUAL & / FULL / PROTECTION / TO / AMERICAN / INDUSTRY. According to L. Forrer's Biographical Dictionary of Medallists, Coin-, Gem-, and Seal-Engravers, Benjamin True first offered his die sinking services in 1835, which suggests that the current medal could be one of his earliest designs. AU in terms of detail with beautifully reflective fields. However, minor surface roughness and a light green haze is noted on both sides. The high bidder should seek the services of a professional conservator in order to stabilize this scarce medal.
