    Description

1860 "Wide Awakes" Lincoln Token. Satterlee-154, Sullivan-AL-1860-74. White metal, plain edge, 19.3 mm. Small bust facing right of Lincoln within a beaded circle, ABRAHAM LINCOLN / NATUS.FEB.12.1809 around. Reverse: a decorative WIDEAWAKES within a beaded circle, ABRA-HAM LIN-COLN around top, HONEST ABE OF THE WEST around lower periphery. The term "wide awakes" became popular during the 1860 presidential campaign and refers to the most popular of several Republican paramilitary marching organizations. It is believed that the Wide Awakes consisted of over 400,000 members in 1860. This piece is Uncirculated with slightly reflective fields, although scattered abrasions reduce the brilliance. The dies are aligned in "medal turn" yet rotated approximately 15 degrees.
