Republic 1/2 Bolivar (or Real) 1889 XF Details (Surface Hairlines) NGC, Caracas mint, KM21. Well detailed with limited actual wear on the raised devices and quite attractive despite mild wispy handling evidence in the fields accounting for the technical designation. The 3rd finest example of this very rare date seen by the cataloguer, long considered the key of the Republican regular coinage series of Venezuela. While the mundane public might raise their eyebrows at the sustained high price levels when tracing transactions of examples of this coin in any grade, the significance of the present offering will surely catch the eye of the advanced specialist of Venezuelan coinage. To give a glimpse of this perceived importance, suffice it to say that when he described the only finer example of this rarity publicly offered that the cataloguer is aware of (roughly 35 years ago, lot 1076 in Freeman Craig & Co. 10/1981 auction), esteemed numismatist Freeman Craig boldly stated "it is likely that the collection next housing this coin will be the most prominent of all Venezuelan coin collections". Rarely seen in any grade and particularly desirable so nicely detailed despite the noted mild shortcomings, a true landmark offering for the advanced collector of Venezuelan coinage likely to attract sustained bidding attention.
