Description

A Stunning Venezuelan Rarity
The First We Have Seen!

Republic silver Proof Essai Venezolano 1874 PR63 NGC, Paris mint, KM-E16. Reeded edge. Obv. Head of Simon Bolivar left with ESSAI in tiny letters near the edge between 7 and 8 o'clock. Rev. National arms with date below. As one might expect of a Paris mint Essai, the strike is superb. The fields are fully mirrored beneath an overlay of russet patina, and light contact marks are noted on close examination. The Paris mint was striking coins for numerous countries at this time, including several in South America. Albert Desire Barre was the Chief Engraver of the mint during a period from 1855-1878 and his name appears prominently on many South American, Asian, and other coins, both regular issues and patterns (or Essais), as the engraver. All of these Paris mint Venezuela patterns are quite rare, and highly desirable. Only two pieces have been certified in Essai by NGC, both in Proof 63.
