Description
Remarkable 1917-D Obverse Mintmark Half
MS66, Tied for Finest Graded
1917-D 50C Obverse MS66 PCGS. In addition to its status of
one of two D-mint Obverse Mintmark issues in the Walking Liberty
set, the 1917-D Obverse Mintmark is also a low-mintage production,
made to the extent of only 765,400 coins. The present piece is tied
with a small handful of other Premium Gems for the honor of finest
certified at PCGS and NGC combined. Even Gem coins are highly
elusive and seldom offered. This piece shows mostly untoned
silver-white areas remaining on both sides, but there are crescents
of intermingled amber and gold hugging the peripheries on both
sides. Copious luster bursts forth, complementing a bold strike
that encompasses a split thumb on Liberty and good articulation
throughout. In particular, the eagle's trailing leg and Liberty's
head are much bolder than normally seen, important bonuses for this
remarkable coin. Population: 5 in 66, 0 finer (9/09).(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 24PR, PCGS# 6570, GSID# 6713)
