Description

Gem 1917-S Half Dollar, Obverse Mintmark

1917-S 50C Obverse MS65 NGC. According to Jeff Ambio's recent reference on the series, the 1917-S Obverse and Reverse types are about equal in high-grade rarity, but the Obverse Mintmark style is about twice as rare in overall Mint State, due to the smaller number of lower-Mint State examples known. Ambio points out that no more than 60 examples exist in Gem and finer grades.
This Gem piece shows pinkish surfaces on both sides, with a peppering of toning flecks ranging from purple-gray to black. The reverse features a more complicated palette, predominantly pinkish with glints of mint, gold, and amber along with glimpses of luster. Despite the rather deep toning, the surfaces are remarkably clean for an issue that seldom comes so nice. The bold strike has produced a split thumb on Liberty, and only minor weakness appears on the eagle's right (facing) leg. Census: 23 in 65, 2 finer (9/09).(Registry values: N4719)
