Description

1917-S Reverse Half Dollar, MS64
Exceptional Luster, Strike, and Eye Appeal

1917-S 50C Reverse MS64 PCGS. Glancing at the early Walkers in this auction shows that one astute collector formed a set of MS64 coins, with coins such as this one. These pieces are quite impressive when viewed together. One commonality is they all have exceptional luster, which all knowledgeable collectors know is the "life" of a coin. The wisdom of such a near-Gem set can be seen by comparing the price and appearance of these MS64 coins to the same coin graded MS65. For instance, the '17-S Reverse is available for approximately a quarter of the price of a Gem, but this piece in particular has probably 80% of the eye appeal of an MS65. The softly frosted mint luster is overlaid by a light, even layer of gray-golden patina. The striking details are strong throughout, but as usual, lack absolute fullness. Only the smallest abrasions can be found on each side, none of which are worthy of individual mention.
