Description

1918 Half Dollar, Frosty MS66
Overlooked Early Series Rarity
None Certified Finer

1918 50C MS66 PCGS. CAC. Some speckled rainbow toning near the rims yields to lilac-silver hues at the centers of this resplendent 1918 half. Although generally available in lesser grades, the 1918 is an unsung rarity in MS66 and it is unavailable any finer. In keeping with other dates and mints in the early Walking Liberty series, nearly all of the issues are rare in high Mint State grades, perhaps causing collectors to overlook the 1918 with its "large" mintage of more than 6.6 million pieces. Obviously, fewer pieces were saved than with the lower-mintage earlier issues.

A crisp strike on Liberty's head and branch hand join moderate feather definition on the eagle's leg. A few light abrasions are visible among the skirt lines. Mint luster glows brightly beneath the attractive patina -- all factors that contribute to the accompanying CAC endorsement. Population: 9 in 66, 0 finer. CAC: 4 in 66, 0 finer (6/16).Population: 9 in 66, 0 finer. CAC: 4 in 66, 0 finer (6/16).
