Pleasantly Toned Half Dollar, MS621919-D 50C MS62 PCGS. In his The complete Guide to Walking Liberty Half Dollars, Bruce Fox writes that the 1919-D half dollar is: "A true condition rarity. Very rare in mint state as well as EF and AU. As with the 1919-P, the lower grade coins are becoming increasingly more difficult to find." Moreover, the issue is perennially weak, particularly in the areas of Liberty's head and left (right facing) hand.
On the MS62 coin in the present lot, Liberty's head is a little better defined than usually seen, and the facial features are quite strong. The hand area is weak, as is the eagle's left (right facing) leg. Most of the lines in the outer portions of the gown, on the other hand, are sharp. Pleasing luster emanates from both sides of the lightly toned surfaces. Delicate sky-blue and beige-orange patina rests on the obverse, and golden-tan color on the reverse. There are no mentionable contact marks.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 24PZ, PCGS# 6578)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.
This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
