Rare, High Grade (MS64) 1919-D Half
1919-D 50C MS64 NGC. V-101. Doubled D west. The 1919-D is one of the keys to the Walking Liberty half series. It is also a major condition rarity as well as a strike rarity. As one would suspect, it is seldom seen in high grades, and when encountered is a pricey item. While the normal 1919-D has luster that is not as bright as its Philadelphia counterpart, on this example the surfaces have a thick, satiny texture--not particularly bright, that is true, but definitely original and attractive. Only the slightest abrasions are present and account for the less-than-Gem grade. The striking details are strong on Liberty's hand, the skirt lines, and the eagle's plumage; in fact, it is strong in all areas except the head of Liberty, a feature that is expected on virtually all 1919-D halves. Census: 58 in 64, 4 finer (8/07).(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 24PZ, PCGS# 6578, GSID# 6719)
